Tree planting funding and grants

Choose the right grant for you

Government tree planting grants offer an average of £19,000 per hectare for planting and establishment helping cover the costs so you can see the benefits without carrying all the risk. The amount you receive will depend on the specifics of your grant application.

There are two main funding routes: the England Woodland Creation Offer and Regional Woodland Creation Grants.

Government-backed grants, funded for the long term, so you can plan with confidence.

The England Woodland Creation Offer

The Forestry Commission’s England Woodland Creation Offer (EWCO) offers up to £10,200 per hectare for planting and maintenance, plus up to an additional £12,700 per hectare in stackable payments for projects delivering wider public, social, and environmental benefits. EWCO also provides annual payments of £400 per hectare for 15 years to support establishment. Forestry Commission advisors will help you put together a plan that works for you.

Regional Woodland Creation Grants

If your land is in an eligible catchment area, you can apply through a Regional Woodland Creation Grant provider. Partners such as England’s Community Forests, or The Northern Forest offer full funding for planting and establishment in many cases, with some providing upfront payments to reduce the financial pressure at the start. These schemes also offer tailored advice and one-to-one support to help design woodland that fits around your farm business and works for your land.
